What began as a personal journey toward healthier living has evolved into a movement that blends wellness, social connection, and purpose. The Lowveld Walkers, a community-driven fitness collective, has grown into one of Mpumalanga’s most vibrant walking teams.
Their recent 6th Annual Colour Walk, held under the theme “Free Your Spirit,” was a colourful celebration of release and renewal. For many participants, it served as a reminder that mental wellness begins with movement, mindfulness, and human connection.

WALKING FOR WELLNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH
Brand Ambassador Nkosi Nkossy says the Colour Walk provides a special space where participants can let loose and forget about societal issues for a while. Life can be challenging, and the walk encourages everyone to be present, have fun, and reconnect with themselves.
The walks embrace a Mind, Body, and Soul approach, blending physical activity with purpose.“We’ve learned that exercise can lift one’s mood, release negative energy, and that social connections are crucial for mental well-being,” Nkossy adds.
A FAMILY THAT WALKS TOGETHER
For participant Phathutshedzo Mafuna, joining the Lowveld Walkers in March 2025 has been life-changing. He explains that what keeps him coming back every weekend is the environment the group provides. It has become a family of love, a space for healing, and a hub for mental health.
During the walks, members share stories, exchange advice, and find comfort in the company of others.
“Everyone has a story to tell if given an ear,” he says. “These walks have taught me to appreciate people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds.”

FROM COLOUR TO CAUSE: RAISING CANCER AWARENESS
This weekend, the Lowveld Walkers turn their focus to another vital cause: their 8th Annual Cancer Awareness Walk, hosted at VW Mbombela. Participants are encouraged to wear pink and white in solidarity with breast-cancer survivors.
“This walk honors survivors, supports those diagnosed, and encourages early detection,” Nkossy says. “It’s about community, hope, and solidarity.”
The walk starts from VW Mbombela, opposite Riverside Mall, and is open to everyone.
MORE THAN A WALKING TEAM
The Lowveld Walkers have grown into a dynamic community. Weekly route rotations, themed walks, and a growing following ensures that no one feels alone while being part of the team.
“First-time walkers, you made the right choice by joining us,” Nkossy says. “Participation is free of charge. If you’re looking for a family or a fun yet meaningful hobby, consider walking with Lowveld Walkers at least once.”
As Phathutshedzo reflects “it’s more than walking. It’s about connecting, breaking barriers, and celebrating life. You leave every walk feeling lighter, happier, and part of something bigger.”
“The Lowveld Walkers are just one of many initiatives bringing positive change to Mpumalanga communities, alongside programmes like the Township Economy Support Programme.”
Follow the Lowveld Walkers on social media and join them on their next walk. Here, community spirit does not just move hearts, it moves feet.
